What is Funnel Metrics?

Measurements taken at each stage of the marketing and sales funnel, tracking how prospects move from awareness through to purchase and identifying where drop-offs occur.

In Depth

Understanding the Details

Funnel metrics quantify the health of your go-to-market machine. At each stage — visitor, lead, MQL, SQL, opportunity, closed-won — you measure volume (how many?), conversion rate (what percentage advance?), and velocity (how quickly?). These metrics reveal exactly where prospects get stuck or fall off. If you have plenty of leads but few MQLs, lead quality or scoring criteria might be the issue. If MQL-to-SQL conversion is low, marketing-sales alignment needs work. If SQL-to-close is strong but volume is low, you need more pipeline. Funnel metrics are most powerful when tracked over time (are we improving?) and segmented by channel, persona, and product (where are we strongest?).

Examples

How It Works in Practice

Conversion rate waterfall

Tracking shows: 10,000 visitors → 500 leads (5%) → 100 MQLs (20%) → 40 SQLs (40%) → 12 closed-won (30%), identifying lead-to-MQL as the biggest drop.

Channel comparison

Funnel metrics reveal organic search produces higher MQL-to-SQL conversion (45%) than paid advertising (25%), despite paid driving more raw leads.

Velocity tracking

Average time from MQL to closed-won decreased from 90 to 65 days after implementing a new sales process, improving capital efficiency.

Importance

Why It Matters

Funnel metrics tell you exactly where your go-to-market efforts are working and where they're breaking. Without them, improvement is guesswork.

Misconceptions

What People Often Get Wrong

The funnel is linear. Actually, prospects move back and forth between stages, and the funnel is more of a useful model than a literal path.

Top-of-funnel metrics matter most. Actually, bottom-of-funnel conversion rates often have more impact on revenue than traffic volume.

Funnel metrics only matter for marketing. Actually, the entire funnel from first touch to close requires cross-functional measurement and optimisation.

Our Approach

How We Handle Funnel Metrics

We build funnel tracking that connects marketing activity to revenue outcomes, giving teams clear visibility into where to focus improvement efforts.
